I would like to congratulate my dear friend and colleague Senator Alan Ferguson for the enormous contribution he has made to the Senate over almost 18 years, following his decision not to seek re-election at the coming Federal Election.

Senator Ferguson – who will continue to serve as Deputy President of the Senate until the end of his term – has been a strong and fearless advocate for the interests of South Australia, in particular for those living in rural and regional areas.

Alan served with distinction as the President of the Senate under the Howard Government and his knowledge of procedures and appreciation of the history and conventions of the Senate is unrivalled.

He also provided outstanding service as the Chairman of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade for an unprecedented eight years.

Admired and respected across the political divide, Senator Ferguson has every reason to be proud of his achievements.

He has also made a significant contribution to the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party and I am certain he will continue to do so.

Senator Ferguson will be greatly missed and I wish Alan and his family the best for his life after politics.
